Life Sketch of Michael Hayes
ichael Hayes was born on December 7, 1948 in Omaha, Nebraska. The eldest of three children, Michael grew up in Omaha, and graduated from Omaha North High School in 1967. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1975 after eight years of service.
After Vietnam, he was stationed at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, California, where he met Diana Landry at her job at the local Der Wienerschnitzel stand. They were married on July 18, 1970 and had three children, Michelle, Denise and Michael. While in the Air Force, Michael, a strong believer in higher education, continued his education and earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of LaVerne.
Michael was relocated to Massachusetts by the Ford Motor Company in 1979. He and the family resided in Massachusetts for 21 years, during which time he served as an executive with Digital Equipment Corporation, and was a director at Lotus/IBM. Michael’s accomplishments were recognized by many organizations, including the International Who’s Who of Professionals in 1996. He was a member of The Partnership, Inc. Boston Fellows program and served as Vice President of the Minutemen chapter of the Association for Services Management International (AFSMI). During his career, Michael earned numerous awards and recognitions.
Michael loved sports and enjoyed playing basketball, was passionate about playing golf, and completed three Boston Marathons, including Boston’s 100th Marathon. He enjoyed telling jokes, vacationing in Cape Cod with his family, world travel, fine food, jazz, playing cards, and was especially proud of his Mercedes Benz and his Rolex watch. He wanted people to know “I had a good life.”
In 2002, Michael became marketing director at J.D. Edwards and relocated the family to the Denver, Colorado area. In May of that year Michael suffered a heart attack that eventually forced him to retire. He enjoyed watching his family grow with the birth of four grandchildren, and the addition of a son-in-law. Michael was looking forward to another son-in-law, and a daughter-in-law Elaine, who has brought three additional grandchildren to the family. He endured slowly deteriorating health over the years and eventually succumbed on January 11, 2009.
